We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.
The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.
