The vehicles for the 2026 season are expected to be lighter, more agile and sustainable compared to current models.

Formula 1 has introduced the simplified language that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The championship is embarking on what is considered the largest rules overhaul in its long history next season, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the required adoption of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a significantly increased energy storage, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

Throughout races, pilots will carefully oversee ERS energy – potentially on flying laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Broad surveys were conducted with a mix of viewers, including new, casual and core fans, to identify which terminology would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The stated goal was to render a range of advanced new areas of the racing as accessible as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the active aerodynamics – have been discarded in preference for intuitive labels that succinctly convey the primary purpose of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding battery management, regeneration, and conservation.

The new regulations introduce a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to aid the viewers' comprehension of the strategic duel.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a driver is less than a second the car ahead to assist with an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It grants the driver peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the overall battery capacity is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – opening on the straights for reduced drag and increased velocity, and sealing in the corners for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: The system can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in certain corners where only reduced throttle is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although teams will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will open on the straights to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will retain 18-inch rims, but the rubber compounds will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30mm at the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% electrical this year.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive component that generated electricity from the turbo.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic production methods.
